How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room

Choosing the right rug size can make or break a room. Too small, and the space feels disconnected. Too large, and it overwhelms. Here is our expert guide to finding the perfect fit for every room in your home.

Living Room

Your living room rug should anchor the seating area and create a sense of togetherness. The golden rule: at least the front legs of all major furniture pieces should sit on the rug.

  • Small living room (10x12 ft): A 5x8 rug works well, placed under the coffee table with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug.
  • Medium living room (12x14 ft): An 8x10 rug is ideal. It gives enough room for all furniture front legs to rest on it comfortably.
  • Large living room (14x18 ft or larger): Go for a 9x12 or larger. All furniture should sit entirely on the rug for a luxurious, cohesive look.

Dining Room

A dining room rug must be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Add at least 24 inches to each side of the table.

  • 4-person table (3x4 ft): 6x9 rug minimum
  • 6-person table (3.5x6 ft): 8x10 rug
  • 8-person table (4x8 ft): 9x12 rug

Bedroom

The most common bedroom layout places a large rug under the bed, extending 18–24 inches on each side and at the foot. This ensures you step onto softness every morning.

  • Queen bed: 8x10 rug or two 3x5 runners on each side
  • King bed: 9x12 rug or two 3x5 runners on each side

Alternatively, place a smaller rug at the foot of the bed for a decorative accent.

Entryway & Hallway

Runners are perfect for hallways β€” aim for a runner that is about 6 inches shorter than the hallway on each end. For entryways, a 3x5 or 4x6 rug creates a welcoming first impression.

Pro Tips

  • Use painter’s tape to mark out rug dimensions on your floor before purchasing. This gives you a visual preview of the size.
  • When in doubt, go bigger. A rug that is slightly too large looks intentional; one that is too small looks like an afterthought.
  • Leave 12–18 inches of bare floor showing between the rug edge and the wall for a balanced look.
  • Handmade rugs may vary 1–2 inches from listed dimensions β€” this is normal and part of their artisan character.
